StageEnclosure

L3–L632-oz deli cup or medium enclosure, 10×8.5×15 cm
L7–adultlarge enclosure, 12×10×20 cm; 30 cm is roomy

Height at least 2.5× body length (3× if you can), 2× clear drop below the perch, width 1.5×. Move up when the mantis is a third of the height. Here that is the molt into L7.

Heat: most homes need nothing; below 68°F, a small heat emitter above the mesh or mat on a side wall, on a thermostat; never underneath, no heat lamps on plastic, no UV. Substrate: dry coco fiber, paper towel, or a bare floor; damp substrate is the one thing it does not forgive. Ventilation: mesh top plus side vents; you should never see condensation. Decor: several thin, rough twigs it can grip, one reaching the lid.

Feeding

StageFeederHow manyHow often
L1–L2Melanogaster fruit flies4–6every 1–2 days, keep a few present
L3–L4Hydei fruit flies, small house flies4–6every 2 days
L5–L6Houseflies, green bottles, small dubia; blue bottles from L62–3every 2–3 days
L7+ / adultBottle flies, moths, medium dubia1–2every 3–4 days

Prey no more than a third of body length; err smaller. No wild-caught insects, no crickets. It stalks and chases, so overfeeding is the risk: when the slim abdomen looks tight and swollen, skip two feedings; it can end in a rupture. Remove uneaten feeders the same day.

Handling and molting

Handling is fine from day one; the only time to leave a mantis alone is around a molt. Let it walk onto an open hand; wash your hands first, since a finger that smells like prey can get grabbed, harmlessly. The twig pose is the species working, not stress. Adult males fly; handle them over the enclosure.

Premolt fast: 2–7 days for nymphs, 1–2+ weeks before the final molt. Humidity at the top of the range; never spray the mantis; remove every feeder.

  • Refusing prey 24+ hours
  • Hanging upside-down for hours
  • A dull or slightly darker look
  • Swollen wing buds at sub-adult

After any molt, hands off until hardened (moving normally, gripping firmly, color back up): about 24 h for a nymph, 48+ for an adult. No food until then; first meal slightly smaller.

Females live about 10–12 months from hatch, males 6–9. Females reach adult after 7–8 molts (around L8–L9), males one fewer and a stage ahead. Nymphs ship unsexed; the stage you receive varies with each hatch.
