The clean black-and-white striping is the whole appeal. Armadillidium maculatum is one of the most recognisable isopods in the hobby, and one of the easiest to keep. It’s a true “roller”: disturb it and it balls up tight, which is half the fun of keeping them.
Unlike the tropical Cubaris we carry, this is a temperate species from southern Europe. That makes it forgiving of ordinary room conditions and a genuinely good first isopod.
What You’re Buying
A starter colony, not a single animal. Isopods are sold as a group because the colony is the unit that survives: individuals come and go; the colony establishes and produces.
Zebras are a moderate breeder, steadier than a fast workhorse, faster than a Cubaris. They need both sexes and a stable setup, and they’ll build a visible colony over a few months. Read the isopod care guide before your colony arrives.
Keeping Them
Room temperature is fine, roughly 65–80 °F. The one thing they want is a moisture gradient: keep about half the enclosure damp and half on the dry side, with good ventilation, and let them choose. They tolerate a drier setup than tropical species and dislike a stagnant, soaking one.
The non-negotiables:
- A moisture gradient: damp end, dry end, never uniformly wet.
- A calcium source: cuttlebone or crushed eggshell, for clean molts.
- Leaf litter and decaying hardwood, the base of their diet, plus a small weekly protein.
- Ventilation so the damp side stays fresh.

Zebra vs the Others
Zebra is the hardy, beginner-friendly one and a poor climber, so it stays put. If you want a slow, premium display colony instead, that’s the Cubaris world: Rubber Ducky, Panda King, Cherry Blossom. Frequently Asked Questions
Are Zebra isopods good for beginners?
Yes, they’re the easiest isopod we carry. Temperate, forgiving of room conditions, and a moderate breeder, so a first-time keeper actually sees the colony grow.
Can I keep them with other isopods?
Keep them on their own. Mixing two isopod species means one out-competes the other and you slowly end up with a single-species culture anyway, plus you can’t track or harvest cleanly. One species per enclosure.
Do they climb?
No. Like all Armadillidium, they don’t scale smooth glass, which also makes them low-risk around a molting animal.
Will they clean my vivarium?
They help, but they’re kept mainly for looks and they’re not a heavy waste-processor. For real cleanup, run springtails; keep the Zebras for the stripes.
